If Hollywood is a lens onto what it means to live in New York City, we can safely assume that for many years, Brooklyn was often seen as a sort of ugly duckling. Think of 70’s classic Saturday Night Fever’s Stephanie, yearning to escape to Manhattan from her stifling life in boring Bensonhurst. Brooklyn went through plenty of growing pains before blossoming into the swan it is today.
Always in flux, Manhattan has become so oversaturated in the meantime with cripplingly priced (often vacant) commercial and residential real estate that at some point, prospective buyers turned away from the city that never sleeps to her well-rested neighbor, Brooklyn. Most of those who made the leap and bought homes in New York’s biggest will readily admit that they still haven’t looked back.
With its more relatable scale and residential density, community feel, and youthful verve, it’s easy to see why Brooklyn has become a buzzword for the customer satisfaction of home buyers. The borough offers superior zoning and a generous selection of niche targeting in the real estate market that’s sure to entice even the most finicky of those looking to make a home purchase.
There is also the psychological quotient of that magic word, potential. Manhattan is financially untenable for anyone who isn’t a prosperous mid-career professional or rock star’s offspring, and even these often opt to plant their flag in Brooklyn, which is still on the up and up with a renaissance impossible to ignore.
For those who prefer to play it smart when making a move substantial as buying a New York home, the multi-cultural and pan-generational outer reaches of Brooklyn are the ideal respite from Manhattan’s “old guard” residents. It offers a slower pace of life, the character of centuries and- let’s just face it- Brooklyn is cooler.
